I'm thinking of putting a new 4 speed in my car. It has a mild 396 in it with a muncie 4 speed but not sure which one I was told it is a close ratio but have to pull it out to be sure. Came with a M21 but just got a M20 . M20 is way more responsive to street driving and low gears take off much quicker. It just takes some getting used to transbreaking or downshifting on the big end because the ratio is not as close as the M21 . I prefer the M20 better, wish I had it all along.

This stuff is starting to drive me crazy. First the carpet debacle now this. The case. says "C" M22 the gears seam to say M20/21. That absolutely and positively is an M20 (wide ratio). BOTH the angle of the gear teeth and the 2 grooves on the cluster gear are what determines that. Too bad the original M22 gears are not in the case.

What usually happens is that old aluminum case lets things get sloppy and its downhill from there. The M21 is the strongest ratio aside from the M22 due to the lower helix angle of the teeth on the 22.

I'm looking at muncie m21/m22's. The engine is a mild 454, oval ports, big valves, solid isky Z45 cam, (like an LS6 cam with tighter 108lsa), 10:1 comp. Approx 460hp 520tq. Rearend is 12 bolt 3.73's, 26" tire. I am leaning towards the M22 for strength. Car will be occasionally run at the strip but, mostly street driven.
