Closest thing to a ripper I have is a John 650 chisel plow. It is the model that came out in the mid 1950s. It was available in either a mechanical lift or the brand-new-at-that-time hydraulic lift, which is what I have. I have it set at 12" shank spacing and run it as a 10 shank so it covers the duals on my Oliver 1850 diesel (~90 hp ).

I would suggest a draw behind type ripper, not a 3pt mount one, they tend to follow the ground better, and are more easy to adjust the penetration angle. In the heavy soils like we have in central Illinois, the spike teeth harrows level alot better, and also break up the clods as you go. I would say that we get at minimum of 50% reduction in clods, with the larger clods getting broke up into smaller pieces.
